The EGD Procedure

The EGD procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, while you are under sedation. You will need to bring someone with you who can drive you home afterward.

During an EGD, a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera attached to one end is inserted into your mouth. The tube is guided down your esophagus, through your stomach, and into your upper intestine.

The camera allows your gastroenterologist to view your esophagus and upper GI system. If your doctor detects polyps or abnormal tissue, a tissue sample can be taken, which will be biopsied to determine the presence of abnormal, precancerous, or cancerous cells.
